Our client is a single executive with a busy, full-time career who came home to her “refuge” San Jose town home each night to a kitchen that she just hated. The goal was straight forward: Make it functional, beautiful and energy efficient.
Space was limited in this galley kitchen. The cabinets did not function well, the sink counter was at a split level which made the work space cramped, the lighting was horrific and the dark cabinets gave a “closed in” feeling. As a townhome, the space has no adjoining windows to provide natural lighting which further limited the design options.
Ms. Client wanted to pet her personal “stamp” on the overall look, so there were several shopping trips (some just for research) that she and the designer took so that “her look” could first be identified, and ultimately achieved. She wanted a more modern, clean, bright look to the space without a major re-design which was not in her budget.
The two major layout changes are that the dishwasher was moved from the right of the sink to the left. This allowed for a Lazy Susan corner cabinet. A Lazy Susan corner unit was also installed to the right of the stove to dramatically increase the storage space. The sink counter (which was previously split at counter and bar height) was now level at counter height which allowed the kitchen to flow into the adjoining living space and make it more functional.
To stay within budget and prevent the space from losing some of its "coziness", the designer recommended keeping the existing soffit. The cabinets used were Crystal "Quest" semi-custom to provide a frameless structure for better space utilization and a modern clean look in a natural maple finish. The granite countertops and backsplash were selected in complementary colors to build on the modern, bright theme. To compensate and provide some contrast, the stone flooring was chosen in a darker tone.
To address both the issue of poor lighting and energy efficiency, we added new fluorescent recessed ceiling lights. We used shower trims on these lights so the fluorescent bulb would not be obvious and it was felt that the overall look was more finished. Fluorescent task lighting was also installed and for impact, the client scoured the internet to find just the right pendant lights. All the new appliances are energy star.
